Adopted: Zeus, a 16 month old Chocolate Male Labrador, has found his forever home.

Here is a Bio from his foster family……..

"My name is Zeus. I am not a god of the sky or anything like that, but I am strong and I have presence when I trot into a room. I am a handsome chocolate Labrador mix with a beautiful white strip down my chest and adorable white toes. I am 16 months old with energy and a lot of joy. I am crate and house trained and well behaved. I rarely bark. I do not jump up on people or onto furniture. I like being outdoors to play a game of fetch or to hang with my canine buddies. I'm pretty easy going. I'm just looking for my forever home. Oh, by the way - my ideal home is one that does not have a cat living in it. Just sayin'...."

Adopted: Grizzly, a 4-5 year old Chocolate Male Labrador, has found his forever home.

Here is a Bio from his foster family……..

"My name is Bonnie and I am a ‘foster mom’ with the Las Vegas Labrador Rescue (LVLR). This means that when a dog is rescued, after it is medically checked out and spayed or neutered, it goes to one of the many foster homes that are part of the LVLR team. This is an amazing Labrador that has a medical condition which took three months to diagnose and bring him back to a normal healthy, happy Labrador Retriever. Grizzly has Atypical Addison’s Disease. His current status is a happy guy looking for a forever home that meets his needs, abides by all veterinary instructions, financially able to cover increased veterinarian visits and prescriptions “estimated” to be $950.00 annually, plus normal vaccinations and/or other medical needs, and ability/willingness to provide him with a more leisurely lifestyle and drinking water available 24/7. If the above introduction seems overwhelming or out of your financial reach, you should consider looking for another Labrador Retriever. Should you request a meet & greet with Grizzly, we will most likely ask why you want him, what you know about his condition and why you believe his best direction in life is to be your Labrador Retriever.

Here’s my part of his amazing story

When Grizzly first arrived, he was in pretty tough shape. He weighed only 57 pounds, and his bones were sticking out everywhere. He showed signs of illness (no appetite, vomiting), but when he stopped drinking water, I knew it was time to bring him to the vet.

Grizzly stayed at Camino Al Norte Animal Hospital for the next two weeks where Dr. Jessica Hagstette and her team looked after him and worked non-stop to diagnose what was wrong. Two weeks in the hospital resulted in an exhaustive list of all the problems Grizzly DIDN’T have, and a dog that seemed to be feeling better with no apparent explanation, but still no diagnosis. Undeterred but convinced that Grizzly might continue to improve more happily in a known home environment, Dr. Hagstette released Grizzly. Still working on the mystery, two days later, she called us back so he could have one more test. At long last – a diagnosis!

With the new knowledge that Grizzly has Atypical Addison’s disease, a treatment plan could finally begin. Luckily, Atypical Addison’s is very treatable with a daily dose of cortisol – the chemical his adrenal glands should have been producing all along, but weren’t. Because of the numerous symptoms that can be seen with Atypical Addison’s Disease, it has earned the medical nickname The Great Imitator. Here is a link for a more clinical explanation: Addison's Disease.

Dr. Hagstette is not only an excellent veterinarian, but also a patient teacher who explained what needed to happen next. First, Grizzly needed medicine, but for this particular medicine (a form of cortisol replacement), the dose is dependent on not just the size and weight of the dog, but more importantly on its level of physical activity and stress. So the optimum dose had to be calibrated over time. Second, Grizzly needed his activity and therefore stress levels to be moderated.

Dr. Hagstette started with the most broadly used medicine at the lowest dosage, which I gave to Grizzly once a day – always at roughly the same time of day, with a meal. I also ensured that his activity levels were moderate. All dogs need exercise, Grizzly included. So we went for a ½ mile walk each day, and Grizzly also played with my two other Labs, but for periods of about 10 minutes of running, fussing over toys, catching balls, etc., and then we would all take a break so that he could rest for some hours before a second playtime. It was sometimes a challenge to always keep an eye on him, but he quickly settled into the routine.

This routine – along with a very hearty and robust diet of high quality dry dog food, continued for one month. With his new medicine, I noticed that Grizzly’s water intake went up quite a bit, and his appetite grew to the point that he would wake me up at 4am to be fed. Reports of his progress and my observations were reviewed every few days by Dr. Hagstette and also by the Director of the LVLR, and we adjusted his meal plan accordingly.

During month one, Grizzly’s appetite steadily and quickly grew. His body’s ability to process protein and fat came back online, and he started to gain some much needed weight. He was still weak, but his enthusiasm and energy level increased every day. I could even start to feel him exerting more strength when we’d go for a walk and he would try to pull me down the road faster than I wanted to walk! More importantly, I could see the happiness in his face and in the wag of his tail. I believe he knew how ill he had been, and was really overjoyed to be able to play and run and feel good again.

At the end of month one, Grizzly went back to the hospital for a physical exam and panels of blood and urine tests. Based on these results, Dr. Hagstette felt Grizzly’s extra water and increased appetite, both of which can be caused by certain types of cortisol replacement, might be reduced or eliminated on a slightly different formulation. So he was switched to the new version – with more good news being that it was also a lower dose (4gm instead of 5mg), and we started another month of observation.

During month two, Grizzly’s excessive water intake came down a bit, and he stopped crying for food at 4am. His water intake is still higher than normal, but this is a small price to pay for a full recovery. He has continued to improve in all directions. He is now 79 pounds, which for a big, tall, long, male Labrador Retriever, is right where he needs to maintain. No more bones are visible anywhere, and when he pulls on the leash (a habit I am now working to break him of), I can feel even more strength than he had a month ago. He plays with my dogs and runs around the back yard – but still in 10 minute sessions, twice or three times a day at most, and only in the cooler or shady times of the day. He has started swimming, which is great exercise. Now he uses the pool for his cool downs – going for a quick swim after playing and when we come back from our evening walks. As the weather gets warmer but not too warm to walk him at all – which will happen soon enough, I may have him go in the pool or gently hose him down with cool water BEFORE we go for our evening walks.

Grizzly is good with other dogs, and with people. Everybody in our neighborhood knows him and looks forward to seeing him each day. We are working on his manners, as he likes to jump up on people to greet them, and I already mentioned that he needs a little work on heeling. Now that he’s feeling so well, his counter-surfing tendency has re-awakened, and we have to be diligent about not leaving anything on the kitchen counters or table. He can sniff out the tiniest morsel of food anywhere!

He is in all ways a normal, happy, goofy, 4-year-old giant bear of a Labrador Retriever. He runs and plays, chews every toy into shreds daily, likes to carry his empty food bowl back to the kitchen to show me he cleaned his plate, and tries to rescue the alien creatures in the swimming pool that you and I know to be the chlorine floaters. He follows me all over the house, because he knows his job is to look after me. But he’s self-confident and is fine when I go out without him.

After caring for Grizzly for almost four months I can say that the small amount of effort required for him to remain a strong beautiful and healthy Lab is minor. A pill with breakfast (or lunch in my case), and active but leisurely lifestyle, which he will fall into perfectly when he’s matched up with an adoptive family that is in synch!"

Here is a Bio from her foster family……..

"Cersai is a just a wonderful bundle of lovable Lab! She is timid and shy around people at first, but when she understands she's safe & secure, she just blossoms into a gorgeous, happy dog. She still has lots of energy and needs to work on her manners, but she is also quick to learn and responsive to structure and boundaries. She does well in the car, sleeps easily crated, knows sit and loves to chase a ball. She also loves to get into the pool! Every day she gets better and more confident, doing well with leash training. She gets along with our 3 Labs, but have no idea how she is with cats or small children. Cersai still needs love, attention and patience from the family that adopts her, will thrive with proper training, and simply needs to be provided with security and affection to have her grow into the spectacular Lab she is meant to be. He is great with my dominant dog and fantastic with my children. He loves to cuddle, chew on stuffed animals toys and chase a ball. Tucker is a fast learner, we started teaching him how to shake, and he caught on quickly! He also goes into his kennel very well and does well sleeping in it. He will definitely make a great pet for any type of family."

We received such an amazing Happy Tail for amazing Nala! We at LVLR couldn't be more happy for this special girl.

"Hello LVLR,
I hope this finds you well. It's been 4 weeks today that Nala came into our lives. We adore her. She has settled in as if she's always been here. The cats did not even hide when she arrived! Nala is an older lady with a lot going for her. We wanted a calm dog to help our resident choco Molly (also from LVLR) with her separation anxiety. It's working too. They are becoming besties and crack us up with their charm. Nala is just as sweet as they come. Also, she continues to improve since her surgery in January. She goes to the park twice daily to gallop around and watch rabbits.
Thank you so much to the Las Vegas Labrador Rescue for all that you have done for this exceptional sweet dog.
Kristin and Bob"

We just love getting updates on our former rescues! Here is a sweet Happy Tail for Shadow (formally Zeus).

"Shadow is a loving, kind and energetic puppy that has been a welcomed addition to our family. Our boys figured out right away that Shadow loves racing around our backyard to play ball.  They have a blast playing keep away with the basketball, soccer and tennis balls.  In addition to chasing after the ball, we’ve found that Shadow also seems to love chasing after his new feline sister, Sage.  Other than the occasional loud HISS, we think the two of them are becoming fast friends.  We are so lucky to have found Shadow and are delighted to be his forever family!!

He is comfortable in the crate or penned, house trained, and does well around other dogs and cats. He does like a good counter surf, and needs to be corrected jumping up, but he's very smart and eager to please. Adopted: Ruger, a 4-5 year old Black Male Labrador, has found his forever home.

Here is a Bio from his foster family……..

"Ruger is a very sweet, very smart little boy. He is happiest when someone is playing fetch with him, and he doesn’t care if it’s a ball or a rope toy, just as long as it is something that he can retrieve. He will always bring whatever it is, back to you and wait very patiently for you to throw it again. Unlike most Labs, he is not a “foodie”. When he eats his meal, I think that he might actually taste the food, and he could take or leave treats. He likes “some” treats, but is very picky about it and will never beg for one. The only vegetable that I’ve gotten him to eat, so far, is steamed broccoli (but cold) with salmon oil on it.

Ruger is very well trained in some areas, although the only basic commands that he knows are “sit” and “come”. He will always come when you call him, even if he knows that you are going to clean his ears, which he really does not like, but will still come to you and let you do it. He loves to go places in the car! He’ll get in and go right to the back seat and will usually lay right down and then he won’t get out until you tell him to, even if you’ve pulled into the garage, shut the door, and gotten out yourself.

He’s great on a leash, and once you have become his “person”, he
will guard you. When we are out on a walk, which he loves first thing in the morning, he will bark at anyone that he doesn’t know if they are coming towards you. If someone is on the other side of the street he will watch them carefully but only bark if they are on your side of the street. Once he sniffs them and they have met his approval, all is well. He does not get physically aggressive.

He loves to sleep on my bed, but is not a big snuggler. He doesn’t mind it, but will let you be the initiator. He really just wants you to rub his chest, and be near you, but doesn’t need to be touching you. Ruger does not like the crate, but will go in it and not destroy it to get out. A little crying and some howling might be involved however. He goes in and out of the doggie door easily.

Ruger apparently gets along with other dogs, although cats are another story. He won’t chase birds, he actually ignores them, but a cat is meant to be chased in his mind. He’s a true retriever.

Ruger is such a good boy!! He will make someone an incredible addition to their family. He will do well in a home with no cat and where he is truly part of a family or someone’s best friend. Someone that will take him with them on outings, to the Dog Park, etc. He’s easy to communicate with and needs both mental and physical exercise."

Please note: Ruger is recovering from an ear infection, and had some allergy issues when he came to LVLR. The change in climate, environment and food has had a positive effect on the allergies, and he should remain on grain-free food to prevent a recurrence.

Here is a Bio from Her foster family……..

"Nala is an incredibly special, wonderful Lab that is looking for her perfect family. She has been in the care of LVLR since early January 2016, as it was discovered she needed surgery before being available for adoption. Nala has undergone a double TPLO (tibial-plateau-leveling osteotomy) for her back legs, fixing what caused her pain, and has recovered exceptionally! She has been approved for adoption by both our LVLR Vet and Surgeon. With her surgery and recovery completed, the long term care recommendations are simple: keep her active. She loves daily walks, occasional runs, and that has been key to her recovery, and a must going forward.
Nala is a very sweet, loving girl. Don't let her stoic face fool you, she's just camera shy, and oh-so adorable when you meet her. She has such a gentle soul, and very affectionate with everyone. She gets along great with our 3 dogs, 2 cats and is good with children. She does loves to chase bunnies though! She likes to spend time laying on her bed, just being in the room with us, and is pretty quiet. Nala is a very strong dog, enjoying a pain-free life now. We take her for walks twice a day for leash training, getting better on the leash every day. She is very well behaved in the house, with excellent manners and calm demeanor. She is always very happy to see us in the morning and when we get home from work. She loves getting attention and having her belly rubbed. She also loves her treats and knuckle bones to chew on. Nala is going to be a great addition for a family that sees how truly awesome she is."

"BEAR is one incredible 82 lb. canine! Whereas he does not know a lot of "commands", he listens and usually understands what you want him to do. He is one of the best dogs that I've had on a leash - no pulling, and stays right by you. He loves his vegetables - carrots, green beans and broccoli, and is not as interested in milkbones.

Bear is all about THE BALL!! He just wants you to throw a ball to him and he is one happy camper. He is quickly learning "drop".

He has no need to get on the furniture, although he loves a 15 minute snuggle on the bed before he goes to his chosen sleeping place, which in my house is between the bed and the wall, a small cozy little place. He just wants to be close to you, not on top of you. He will give you major kisses with all his heart. He does not like the crate. He will go into it, but then he will figure out a way to get out of it. . . little sneek! He's one smart Labrador!

Bear is emotionally very sensitive and will need someone that will lovingly give him a few days to adjust to his new home. Once he has adjusted and understands that you are his forever family, you will not believe what a gem he is. Sweet, loving but not overbearing, playful, barks only when appropriate (when someone new comes to the door), he's great with new people coming in to the home once he knows that it's ok with you. He's good with a doggie door, but would rather just go for a walk.

Bear is going to make someone VERY happy and loved!! He deserves a forever family that will love him to pieces!"

We received this amazing Happy Tail for Henny. What a way to start 2016!

"Just a little update about Henny aka Fletcher.

My wife and I recently moved here to Las Vegas and wanted to get a dog. We ended up adopting Henny aka Fletcher a 7 year old chocolate lab last July. Henny has full of energy for his age and and displayed his playfulness the first time we met him. Dave offered a kennel for Henny which is very nice of him to get Henny adjusted to his new home. We were also told about Henny's right eye which was believed to be a bacterial infection. Henny was seen by a specialist before the adoption and the rescue was generous enough to have everything paid off including the medications on our last visit to the specialist. After a couple of months his right eye dramatically improved and soon enough his eye was cured. Henny is such a sweet and loyal dog. He thinks he is a lap dog and will try to jump on us when we are seating on the couch. We are able to train him not to jump in the couch since he is smart and very responsive to training. He knows sit and stay and will not rush to get his food until I say go. I recently trained him to shake and play dead. He used to pull on the leash while walking but after few weeks of training we can walk him with ease. When we are out to work we leave him with his kong toys with treats which will keep him occupied until we get home and He also loves sleeping on the dog bed we bought for him. So far Henny has been amazing and for his energy we sometimes take him outside as our running partner.

Adopted: Cali, a 9 year old Female Yellow Labrador

Adopted: Cali, a 9 year old Female Yellow Labrador, has found her forever home.

Here is a Bio from her foster family……..

"Cali is such a very sweet and loveable little girl. She is like a puppy who just never finished growing in to her skin, which translates into a very soft, fluffy coat and extremely huggable. She is very well behaved, never trying to get anything off of the kitchen counter, or off of your dinner plate. As long as you acknowledge her, she has no need to jump on anyone. She barks when appropriate (not excessively) – when someone is at the door, or on your property. . . you will know it!

Cali is full of love and freely gives and receives kisses, hugs, belly rubs, head scratches…. She is a snuggler! She sleeps with me (and very quietly, except for an occasional little snore, which is actually very cute in her case) although I think she would be happy in a bed on the floor next to you, if that is your preference. She would not be happy to sleep in another room, separated from you.

Cali is good on a leash, and loves to go for walks so that she can sniff the world. She is very aware of her surroundings and keeps a close eye on everything. She loves to play fetch and being chased is one of her favorite things. As for treats, well, she would just as soon have a bowl of veggies (broccoli, carrots and green beans) as a milk bone. She often goes and stands in front of the refrigerator to let me know that she has not had her daily quota of veggies.

Of course she is not perfect – how boring would that be? In her mind, birds and cats exist to be chased, and I am a cruel foster mom because I won’t let her. . . .c’est la vie. She’s forgiving though and doesn’t seem to hold it against me, but boy, would she LOVE to chase a bird or a cat!!! They just know better than to come near my yard.

Cali would do well in a household where she gets a lot of love and can give a lot of love. She would be a great addition to any family, AS a family member. Single person, large family, I don’t think that it matters to her. She’s great with a doggie door, and has had no accidents in my home. For a 9 year old, she still has a lot of puppy personality.

Adopted: Sam, a 2 year old Male Black Labrador, has found his forever home.

"Sam is doing amazing! He has such sweet nature, loves playing with our dogs, yet takes time to nap and snuggle. He has lots of puppy energy & goofiness, but is very smart and quickly responds to direction. He's playful and gets along with other dogs, and loves to chase birds. He's potty trained, sleeps great in a crate, rides well in a car, is getting better walking on leash, and knows a few commands. He is incredibly affectionate and people focused, and just wants to snuggle. Sam will make an active family a fantastic companion! "

Adopted: Jack, a 1 year old Male Black Labrador, has found his forever home.

Here is a Bio from his foster family……..

"Jack is a great year-old Black Labrador. He has the energy of a pup, but is very focused on learning and pleasing. He's also quite good at just curling up at my feet and resting while I work during the day. He likes his crate and goes in easily - although a biscuit tossed in first helps make the process more fun for him! He's great sleeping in the crate overnight, and looks forward to getting outside to relieve himself first thing in the morning. He is also trained now to use the dog door so he is quite self-sufficient.

Jack barks only when/if appropriate. He gets along perfectly with my two other Labs and fell into the pack quite nicely. He's curious and likes to shred his toys but is not destructive of his surroundings. He does well in the car too, and settles down after a few minutes. He is a great, beautiful big boy and is looking for a loving home where he can add his special brand of joy!"

What a fantastic Happy Tail we received for Duke!

"After grieving for several months over the loss of our 14 yr old yellow lab, we felt ready to open our hearts to another lab. We loved the adoption process from the Las Vegas Lab Rescue Group and we were blessed with adopting Duke, our 6 yr old chocolate lab. Duke has a lot of energy and needed some basic training. He now comes, sits, goes down and is not barking as much. We are still working on the walking, but we cannot believe it's the same dog we met weeks ago. He is so loving and playful and just a joy to have around. He is perfect in our house and doesn't touch a thing. He sleeps next to us on the floor all night long without a peep. One thing he cannot be without is his orange ball. It never leaves his side. We love him so much. Thank you for our Duke.

Regards,
Ilene & Jerry C."

Happy Tail: Dudley

What an beautiful Happy Tail we received from Dudley's family.

"We are SO grateful to have adopted Dudley!! This little angel (you can see where his wings were) has given US so much love and support after unexpectedly losing our 9 year old Lab Harry to post op complications Labor Day.

We were told Dudley arrived from a Utah shelter then into the foster moms home. He spent 6 weeks with her, then came to live with us. We suspect Dudley is leery of LONG car rides, as each has resulted in a new home.

We drove him to our CA home this week. He trembled in the car for the first hour. Upon arriving, he discovered that house smelled familiar so he relaxed. He met most of the neighborhood and had a play date with another dog. Another car ride (with another hour of trembling) we returned to Vegas and witnessed pure elation and joy in Dudley's face when he realized he was "home" again. I am including him on frequent errands to show him all roads lead home.

He has captured our hearts AND the middle of the bed every night. He's one terrific snuggler.

Dudley is microchipped, has 3 contact numbers on his name tag and wears a gps tracker, ok, overkill since he's generally within a 10 foot reach. We're not taking ANY chances. We're clueless how this sweet and lovable guy ended up in a shelter, but are thankful he made his way into our lives. Sorry Dudley, now you're stuck with us your ENTIRE life. ♡ you baby boy!!! Mama and Daddy
